DESCRIPTION
Psilocybe cubensis Thailand Lipa yai
Another great strain brought back from southeast Asia by Mushroom John.
Psilocybe cubensis “Thailand Lipa Yai” is a renowned strain originating from the Lipa Yai region on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand. First collected in the late 1990s by Mushroom John Allen, this variety quickly became a favorite in the mycology community for its robust tropical genetics and impressive resilience.
Scientific Characteristics:
-
Spore Color: Rich, deep purple-brown—distinctive of premium P. cubensis strains.
-
Shape & Size: Spores are elliptical to subellipsoid, typically measuring 12–17 x 8–12 micrometers under the microscope.
-
Appearance: Lipa Yai spores are smooth, highly pigmented, and uniform, providing sharp contrast for clear microscopic study.
-
Mycelium Traits: Known for rapid, rhizomorphic mycelial growth and prolific spore print formation (when observed in legal settings).
-
Fruit Body Notes: In natural environments, Lipa Yai produces large mushrooms with broad, golden caps and thick, sturdy stems, although microscopy research focuses solely on the spores themselves.
Research Use:
Lipa Yai spores are prized among mycologists and microscopy hobbyists for their clear morphology, consistency, and distinct Southeast Asian origin. Excellent for comparative studies, genetic research, or expanding diverse spore collections.
Fun Fact: Lipa Yai is sometimes called the “tropical giant” of the cubensis world—famed for its big, bold genetics and origins on a sun-drenched Thai island.
