DESCRIPTION

Psilocybe natalensis Spores

Psilocybe natalensis is a species of psilocybin mushroom belonging to the family Hymenogastraceae. This particular species is found in South Africa, and its specific epithet, "natalensis," is derived from its type locality in Natal.

The species was formally described and recognized as new to science in 1995 by a group of researchers including Jochen Gartz, Derek Reid, Michael Smith, and Albert Eicker. Formal taxonomic descriptions often involve detailing the mushroom's physical characteristics, habitat, and any other distinctive features that help differentiate it from other species within the Psilocybe genus.

P. natalensis mushrooms exhibit hygrophanous characteristics, signifying that their initially brown caps can undergo a color change, transitioning to white. Classified within the Hymenogastraceae family, these mushrooms showcase elevated levels of psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin in their fruit bodies, leading to a pronounced bluing effect. Psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin are naturally occurring alkaloids, renowned for their psychoactive and hallucinogenic properties.
