Psilocybe cubensis South Africa - Transkei Spores

Psilocybe cubensis “South Africa Transkei” (often simply “Transkei”) hails from the wild, windswept coastal region of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. First discovered growing in the grasslands near the Transkei coast in the early 2000s, this strain is famous for being one of the few truly wild cubensis strains from the African continent.

Scientific Characteristics:

  • Spore Color: Deep purple-brown, consistent with classic P. cubensis strains.

  • Shape & Size: Spores are broadly elliptical, typically measuring 12–17 x 8–12 micrometers under the microscope.

  • Appearance: Transkei spores exhibit a smooth, glossy surface and high pigmentation, making them easy to spot and study under magnification.

  • Mycelium Traits: Known for forming strong, rhizomorphic mycelium (in permitted settings), with a reputation for quick colonization and robust growth.

  • Fruit Body Notes: In nature, Transkei produces slender, elegant mushrooms with bright orange-to-gold caps and thin, elongated stems—a marked contrast to stockier cubensis varieties. For microscopy, spore characteristics take center stage.

Research Use:
Transkei spores are prized by mycologists for their wild genetics, offering an excellent case study in adaptation and diversity within P. cubensis. Their unique origin and morphology make them a fascinating subject for spore comparison and research.

Fun Fact:
Transkei is sometimes called the “African Explorer” of cubensis spores—famous for its rugged, untamed lineage and its status as a pioneer strain from the southern hemisphere.
